Amazon MGM Studios today dropped the first trailer for I Play Rocky, the biographical drama chronicling the true story behind Sylvester Stallone’s fight to bring Rocky to the big screen. The film follows Stallone’s journey as an unknown actor and screenwriter who wouldn’t sell his script unless he was cast as the titular role. From director Peter Farrelly (Green Book, Dumb and Dumber) and written by Peter Gamble (Trenches, Office Uprising), I Play Rocky will arrive in theaters in November.

Anthony Ippolito stars as a young Sylvester Stallone. This isn’t the first time Ippolito portrays a real-life actor in a project centered on the making of a classic film. In Paramount+‘s 2022 limited series The Offer, which chronicled producer Al Ruddy’s journey bringing The Godfather to the screen alongside Francis Ford Coppola, Ippolito played a young Al Pacino during the actor’s casting as Michael Corleone. His performance earned praise from viewers for capturing Pacino’s mannerisms and presence. Now, Ippolito is taking on another iconic actor, stepping into a completely different story.

I Play Rocky also stars Stephan James (Surface, If Beale Street Could Talk) as Carl Weathers, who plays Apollo Creed in Rocky, AnnaSophia Robb (Rebel Bridge, The Carrie Diaries) as Sasha Czack, Stallone’s first wife, Matt Dillon (Crash, There’s Something About Mary) as Frank Stallone Sr., Stallone’s father, P. J. Byrne (The Boys, The Rainmaker) as Irwin Winkler, a producer of Rocky, Toby Kebbell (Servant, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Robert Chartoff, another producer of Rocky, Jay Duplass (Dying for Sex, Transparent) as John G. Avildsen, the director of Rocky, Tracy Letts (A House of Dynamite, Lady Bird) as Sandy Maddox, a studio head, Kiki Seto (The Studio) as Talia Shire, Stallone’s co-star playing Adrian Pennino, and Robert Morgan (Hacksaw Ridge, The OA) as Burgess Meredith, Stallone’s co-star playing Mickey Goldmill.

The official synopsis reads, “The film is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky—he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. Told “no” at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. The result is the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie.”
