We were joined back on the Popternative show by Matthew Finlan (Ghosting, Orphan: First Kill) to discuss Hell of a Summer, the comedy slasher written and directed by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It) and Billy Bryk (Friendship, When You Finish Saving the World). The sleepaway camp-themed film premiered in theaters on April 11, and is now available to rent or purchase on VOD and digital platforms.
Finlan stars alongside Wolfhard and Bryk with an ensemble cast including Fred Hechinger (Gladiator 2, Thelma), Abby Quinn (Knock at the Cabin, Landline), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Warfare, Reservation Dogs), Pardis Saremi (Death and Other Details), Krista Nazaire (The Hardy Boys, The Marriage Pass), Julia Doyle (Astrid and Lilly Save the World), and Daniel Gravelle (Pins & Needles).

Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.
Finlan, who plays one of the camp co-workers, Ezra, discusses some of the comedic aspects to the film, particularly during a scene involving his character getting bear maced which was familiar terrain for him: “I even said to the makeup team, ‘I think we gotta go up on the red; I was pepper sprayed in [Orphan: First Kill] and it was pretty red, but this is bear spray so I think it’s going to be even worse, let’s just lather it on’.”
