We were joined back on the Popternative show by Devon Sawa (Chucky, Final Destination) to discuss the new rom-com slasher, Heart Eyes, which premiered in theaters on Febaury 7. Directed by Josh Ruben (Die Hart 3: Hart To Kill) the Valentine’s horror centers on the “Heart Eyes Killer” who has wreaked havoc on Valentine’s Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples for the last several years.
In addition to Sawa, the film stars Olivia Holt (Totally Killer, Cruel Summer), Mason Gooding (Scream, Love, Victor), Gigi Zumbado (Hightown, Bridge and Tunnel), Michaela Watkins (Casual, The Dropout), and Jordana Brewster (Fast X, The Fast and the Furious).
Sawa plays Detective Zeke Hobbs, who along with his partner, Detective Jeanine Shaw (Brewster), are trying to find the killer before another Valentine’s Day is ruined. The name Hobbs and Shaw is no coincidence – they make reference to it in the film, adding to the comedy element Heart Eyes offers.

On mixing comedy with horror and filming his scenes with Jordana, Sawa says, “We were pretty focused. [Brewster] is an absolute treat to work with.”
Sawa is no stranger to the horror genre, but he felt there was something different about Heart Eyes, “I felt like it was an original concept. It really felt like a Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, kind of 90s, 80s rom-com where they just inserted a psycho killer. It made me laugh and smile and I could also see the terrifying moments of it on the page [of the script].”
