Hazbin Hotel Season 2 Features Lilith’s Timely Return, But Clues Suggest She Might Be An Entirely Different Character
If there’s one specific character from Hazbin Hotel Season 1 that fans have been waiting to appear, it’s Lilith. The mother of Charlie Morningstar has been hiding out for so long, but Season 1’s conclusion gave us more build-up to that eventual mother-daughter confrontation. After all, Lilith has continued to be a mysterious figure, even with her recent appearance in Season 2. However, there have been some peculiar clues to suggest Lilith isn’t who she seems she is.
For those unfamiliar with the Morningstar family lore in Hazbin Hotel, their story truly plays out when Adam, Season 1’s antagonist, has a second wife, Eve, as Lucifer and Lilith were sent to Hell for sharing free will. However, Lilith had an uncanny siren-like power, empowering the armies of Hell to rise up. Later on, Lucifer and Lilith gave birth to Charlie, but Lilith had ended up moving to Heaven for unknown means.
In Season 1’s ending, Lute tried to warn Lilith of Hell’s uprising, only for the former “queen” of Hell to remain silent. Now, in Season 2, after multiple calls Charlie made to her, Lilith appears to dismiss her daughter, instead going off-screen to do other things.
While Lilith’s appearance in Hazbin Hotel Season 2 was brief, miniscule clues actually help uncover what’s perhaps the truth about Lilith going forward. Of course, some might be wondering how this theory works, given how Lilith is allowed in Heaven while Lucifer cannot. This is because Lilith isn’t actually Lilith, but rather Eve, through a meticulous process that would not only stop Hell’s uprising before the show’s events, but also tie into what Season 3 may have to offer.
The idea originates from Lilith being Adam’s first wife, which was already a fact, and Eve replacing her because of the “Tree” incident. This may continue to sprout if one believes that Adam asked God to create a lover just like him, nearly having a similar personality like him.
There are also more clues from the original Morningstar family photos from Season 1, where Lilith had a much brighter appearance and optimistic attitude as compared to her personality and looks now. The new necklace on Lilith is a given indicator of how these two figures aren’t the same as two possibilities come to mind.
One idea suggests that this necklace could potentially be the key that’s trapping Lilith’s “true” soul inside, giving precedence to the idea that Lilith could have incidentally switched souls with Eve using this necklace. This would make it easier to believe Lilith’s cold attitude towards Heaven and Hell’s dealings and Lute when she confronted her.
Though, it’s very likely that Eve could have the same Hell-hating traits as Adam, albeit on a much more subtle scale. She might not want to have to deal with Charlie’s doings because it can expose her real identity and getting herself fully involved risks that.
If this mind-control idea of “switching souls” through Lilith’s necklace is true, it’s likely that Eve has control of Lilith’s body or has outright captured Lilith, physical form and all, into this device. It would give precedence to another idea that Eve and Lilith look extremely identical to the point of them being twins.
The other idea is that Lilith is still alive, somewhere out there in Heaven, but Eve is still deciding to disguise herself as Lilith and is using her abilities to further her own ends. Although, the way that all of this playing out would have to rely on one thing: both Lute and Sera are the only ones who know that Lilith is in Heaven because of her deal with Adam.
As such, it’s very likely that, during this transitional process for Lilith, Eve could have eventually made her return to claim Lilith’s identity as Heaven would have held the real Lilith hostage. Thus, Lute and Sera knowing about Lilith’s deal could have spread through Heaven’s higher echelons, particularly reaching Eve at some point.
This would have given Eve enough time to replace Lilith, but she fears that she might eventually be caught out, thus blocking any call made by Charlie and Lucifer. It’s why she’s remained silent all this time and hasn’t truly spoken after the first uprising. Lilith is trapped in this new punishment where she’s unable to inspire Hell and Lucifer is down in the duck-ridden dumps.
However, there are simply so many different routes that Hazbin Hotel can take Lilith. With Hazbin Hotel Season 3 and Season 4 already deep into development, time will decide what Lilith’s plan truly looks like. Whether or not Lilith’s plans include these prevailing theories about her and Eve, or other particular characters, remains to be seen.
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel Season 2 release weekly on Prime Video.
