Lionsgate today gave us a first look at the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, set for theatrical release on November 20, 2026. Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Joseph Zada (We Were Liars, Invisible Boys) will portray a teenage Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson in The Hunger Games films, Elle Fanning (Predator: Badlands, The Great) will play a young Effie Trinket (portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the original films), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain, Succession) as young Caesar Flickerman (portrayed by Stanley Tucci), Ralph Fiennes (28 Years Later, Conclave) as a younger President Coriolanus Snow (previously portrayed by Donald Sutherland and Tom Blyth), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia, Kinds of Kindness) will play young Plutarch Heavensbee (originally played by Philip Seymour Hoffman).
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping also stars Glenn Close (Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Hillbilly Elegy), Mckenna Grace (Regretting You, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Maya Hawke (Inside Out 2, Stranger Things), Whitney Peak (Gossip Girl, Home Before Dark), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Mufasa: The Lion King, Chevalier), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends, American Born Chinese), Billy Porter (Cinderella, Pose), Iris Apatow (Unstable, Love), Edvin Ryding (28 Years Later, Young Royals), Lili Taylor (The Conjuring, The Haunting), Laura Marcus (Death by Lightning, Bad Education), and Kara Tointon (The Teacher, Archie).
Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, The Long Walk) directs from a screenplay adaptation by Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) based on the novel by Suzanne Collins.
