We were joined on the Popternative show by Cale Ambrozic (Hotel Cocaine) and Olly Atkins (Percy Jackson and The Olympians) who play Brayden and Freddie in the teen ice skating romance series, Finding Her Edge. Based based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jennifer Iacopelli, the series premiered on Netflix on January 22.

Finding Her Edge also stars Madelyn Keys (A Mother’s Life), Harmon Walsh (Gossip Girl), Alexandra Beaton (Overcompensating), Meredith Forlenza (Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent), Alice Malakhov (Anne With an E), Niko Ceci (I Woke Up a Vampire), and Millie Davis (The Umbrella Academy).

The series follows the three Russo sisters, heirs to a now struggling figure skating dynasty. Middle sister Adriana (Keys), 17, is training for the World Championships with her new partner, Brayden (Ambrozic), while still grappling with unresolved feelings for her former partner and first love, Freddie (Atkins). Things grow complicated when Adriana and Brayden agree to fake a romantic relationship off the ice to secure a sponsorship and keep the financially strained Russo rink alive.

On honoring the dedication of professional skating athletes, Atkins says, “I mean, it’s an incredible sport, but for us, we’re just stepping into this world for a period of time and I think we really do our best to honor it in the show. But for a lot of incredibly talented athletes, this is their whole life. It’s everything So, it’s cool. It’s nice to be able to bring a little bit of attention to it, but it’s also such an incredible sport that already has an amazing audience around the [world].

The series offers a blend of drama, sports, and romance: “You go from super intimate scenes with your partner to being in a massive room with a bunch of different skaters. It feels like you’re on two different shows. First, it feels like you’re just in a romcom, and then next thing you know you feel like you’re in a teen drama,” Ambrozic tells us.
