We were joined on the Popternative show by director Eugene Kotlyarenko (Spree) to discuss his new dark comedy, The Code which made its world premiere at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival. Starring Dasha Nekrasova, Peter Vack, Vish Velandy, and Ivy Wolk, The Code is set during the height of the Covid pandemic.

The film follows Celine who begins making a documentary about her failing relationship when her boyfriend, Jay, becomes suspicious that she maybe trying to “cancel” him. In a paranoid attempt
to control the film, Jay sets up hidden cameras and tries to entrap Celine into problematic behavior he can record as insurance.

In our interview, Eugene discusses combining surveillance and found footage shots in The Code and working with Peter and Dasha. Eugene also talks about his 2020 horror comedy, Spree, starring Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery.
