We were joined on the Popternative show by director and writer Sean Wang (Nai Nai & Wài Pó), and actors Joan Chen (The Last Emperor), and Izaac Wang (Good Boys) to discuss their new coming-of-age film, Dìdi (弟弟).
Released in select theaters on August 2nd and coming to theaters nationwide on August 9th, the film is set in 2008 during the last month of summer before high school begins. It follows an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy (Izaac Wang) as he navigates friendships, family, new relationships, and skateboarding.
We asked Sean about the 2000s nostalgia seen throughout the film from MySpace, to the early Facebook days, and pop punk music. He also discusses Motion City Soundtrack’s new song which is featured at the end, and how he was able to get the band to be part of Dìdi. Izaac and Joan touch on their characters’ mother-son relationship and how food plays a key role in their bonding.
