One of the most anticipated films of 2023 was Todd Haynes’ May December starring Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, and Julianne Moore. The film follows a notorious tabloid romance that gripped the nation between an older woman and an underage child (Moore and Melton) who married years down the line and an actress (Portman) meeting them to research a film role about the couple’s past.

Cory Michael Smith plays Georgie, the neglected adult son of Moore’s character, and shared with Popternative how his character translated from script to screen. “The first line of the first scene [I’m in] is “how much are they paying you,” which was a huge cue for me to just understand that this is someone who is unapologetic, who’s not too concerned with other people’s feelings because he grew up where people stopped caring about his well-being and his feelings around the age of 13,” Cory told Popternative host Petey Beats.

He went on to say, “So, for most of his life he has just felt like no one’s been particularly taking good care of him, so he doesn’t necessarily need to take good care of other people. Also, you know you can’t run away from the reality of that life, the traumatic life that he lived in high school you know that is what happened and that is life. So he just has to confront what life is and so I like that he’s sort of brash that way but also this is someone, not that he’s aware of this, but for me, he is someone that had an overbearing, controlling mother until he was 13 and then suddenly she’s not there. Then suddenly he is a dog without a leash, and so he wants the same sort of attention from somebody; someone has to replace his mom and no one does, but that sort of behavior just to get love and attention and adoration would remain and informs his behavior.”
