As cliché as it may sound, all good things must come to an end. Sadly, NBC just announced that the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring Andy Samberg, will end after their eighth season. The show was cancelled by the Fox network in 2018, but this time the show is ending on their own terms. When the show originally got cancelled, the response from upset fans was universal.

That is when NBC quickly swooped in and obtained the rights for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and viewers have been blessed with another three seasons since. At the time when NBC bought the rights to the show, I remember feeling like I witnessed something unprecedented. The outcry from fans helped bring back the show. This was a testimony to how beloved the show and its characters are. Sometimes it makes me wonder how many great shows before the age of social media could have been saved if they had it.

Funny Cops

In 2013, during the Comedy Central Roast of James Franco, comedian Bill Hader said “Looking forward to your new show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Funny cops? You’re always pushing the envelope, Andy”. That moment has always stuck with me through Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s entire existence. I remember thinking the exact same thing; how would a show with that kind of premise have longevity? Now almost a decade later, Brooklyn Nine-Nine have solidified their place in people’s hearts with their clever writing, loveable characters, running gags and great cameo appearances. It’s also worth mentioning that Bill Hader did appear in an episode as Captain Seth Dozerman. My personal favourites will always be Hitchcock and Scully (played by Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller), and of the course the Pontiac bandit, Doug Judy (played by Craig Robinson).

The final season has been pushed back to 2021-2022, but I’ll definitely be tuning in to see how the writers will end the chapters for each character. The show won a Golden Globe in 2014, so I don’t doubt they’ll at least be in contention for an award by ending the show with a bang.
