The BBC has announced plans for a Call the Midwife film and a prequel series set during the World War II. Filming has also started for the 15th series of the BBC One drama which follows a group of nurse midwives in London’s East End from the late 1950s to the start of the 1970s.

The Call the Midwife film, which does not yet have an official title, will be set in an as-yet undisclosed overseas location in 1972, and will feature characters from the existing series. It will see the “much-loved” regular characters “take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape,” showrunner Heidi Thomas tells BBC.

As per BBC, the prequel series will “delve into the deeper past” while “offering a view of life in Poplar, east London, during the Blitz.” The series will feature “some familiar (if much younger) faces”, Thomas says.

The film and prequel series will be written, created and produced by Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank.

Season 15 of Call the Midwife will begin with a two-part Christmas special which will see characters travelling to Hong Kong on a mercy mission.
