#5 SpongeBob SquarePants

Still on air, SpongeBob SquarePants premiered in May of 1999. The easiest way to describe this show is simply as a square, yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants who lives in a pineapple under the sea in Bikini Bottom and works at the Krusty Krab.

#4 Hey Arnold!

Hey Arnold! (Yes with the exclamation mark) first aired in 1996. Fourth grader Arnold lives with his grandparents in a city, and each episode revolved around him and his friends dealing with school and related issues. The last season began in 2000 but did not end until the beginning of 2004, stretched over four years.

The Adventures of Pete & Pete ran on Nickelodeon from 1992-1996 and followed two brothers both named Pete. The show followed Pete & Pete, referred to as Big Pete & Little Pete, and their adventures around their town.

This was a Canadian program which first aired in 1979 across the country, and began airing internationally in 1981. It was essentially a sketch comedy show with teenagers in which each episode had a theme. The show is actually said to have helped launch the career of Alanis Morissette. Interestingly, this show is also known for first introducing viewers to the green slime that has become synonymous with Nickelodeon. Production for the show ended in 1990, and reruns were aired on Nickelodeon in the United States until 1994.

Double Dare premiered in 1988 as Nickelodean’s first game show. Two teams competed by answering trivia questions and completing stunts to win prizes. The original series ended on February 6, 1993, and the show was revived as Double Dare 2000 which aired from January 2000 to November 2000.
