For four seasons, True Detective has been a beloved anthology series for HBO that follows police investigations unearthing the personal and professional secrets of those involved. In the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, the plot takes place in Ennis, Alaska with Chief Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Navarro (Kali Reis) teaming up to solve a case when men that operate a research station vanish.

Anna Lambe appears in season four and praised the show for casting authentically and the importance of doing so. “I think especially for the Indigenous cast, there were some of us who knew each other already and for, you know, the team behind True Detective to really go out of their way to cast authentically not just Indigenous talent, but Arctic talent, added a level of life experience and personal experience to the story that I think the season does benefit from,” Anna told Popternative.

She continued, “Everybody is fantastic in the series and does such incredible work and I’m so excited for people to see the rest of the season but that each of us as Northern talent, as Indigenous talent coming and bringing our own experiences, you know, like me going toe-to-toe with Jodie Foster, going toe-to-toe with the white woman, been there, done that. So it was just kind of taking these different situations in life and applying them to the scene, and I feel like that definitely benefited and it’s really an amazing feeling to see Indigenous youth, to see Indigenous women and folks saying like ‘oh my God this reminds me of my cousin, this reminds me of my auntie.’ Leah [played by Isabella Star LaBlanc] is the young, queer representation that young Indigenous women need. It’s so rooted and grounded in a reality that is so important to the story and it definitely adds an extra layer.”
