A24 today revealed a first look at The Death of Robin Hood, a dark reimagining of the legendary outlaw’s story. Starring Hugh Jackman (Song Sung Blue, The Greatest Showman) and directed by Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One, Pig), the film is a reflective take on the iconic hero, exploring the blurred line between myth and truth behind the legend of Robin Hood.

Premiering in theaters on June 19, the synopsis reads, “Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation.”

The cast also includes Jodie Comer (28 Years Later, Killing Eve), Bill Skarsgård (IT: Welcome to Derry, Nosferatu), Murray Bartlett (The Last of Us, The White Lotus), and Noah Jupe (Hamnet, A Quiet Place).

In the first look video, Jackman and Sarnoski explain what audiences can expect from this new take on Robin Hood. “In The Death of Robin Hood, people will really take a second look at the Robin Hood legend. The story of Robin Hood changed over the centuries depending on the era that it was told,” Jackman says.

“This movie feels very different from the rest of the Robin Hood legends. It just has its own twist on it. Like, what if Robin was this bloodthirsty cutthroat? He comes from this violent, brutal, cold world where everyone you meet is probably trying to kill you,” Sarnoski adds.
