The 81st Golden Globe Awards kicked off 2024 awards show season on Sunday, January 7. Hosted by comedian and actor Jo Koy, the ceremony that honors achievement in television and film aired live from The Beverly Hilton on CBS and Paramount+ at 8pm ET | 5pm PT.
Jo Koy opened the show talking about all the movies and shows he got to see from the nominations poking jokes at the running time of Oppenheimer, Robert De Niro’s personal life, the plot of Killers of the Flower Moon, the heavily talked about ending of Saltburn, and more.
Throughout the night awards were given celebrating the best in TV and films over the past year in categories for lead acting, supporting acting, screenplay, original song and more with two new categories added to the bunch: Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
There was a lengthy list of actors that earned Golden Globe nominations for the first time which included Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks for their roles in The Color Purple, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy Of A Fall, Greta Lee for Past Lives, Charles Melton for May December, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun for Beef, Alma Pöystifor Fallen Leaves, Ayo Edebirifor The Bear, Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers and Cailee Spaeny for Priscilla.
Of those first-time nominees, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, Ayo Edebiri, Lily Gladstone, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home Golden Globes in their categories.
Oppenheimer was a big winner of the night with director Christopher Nolan taking home a Globe as well as Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. for their roles in the film. Oppenheimer also earned the Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama. The biggest snub of the night was Barbie. The film was nominated for 9 Golden Globes, and many thought the film would take home many awards following the box office success and cultural impact, but the film only walked away with two.
On the television side, The Bear and Succession proved again to be favorites. It was a concise evening nonetheless with no mishaps and an adequate way to kick off award show season.
